Nanomaterials in cosmetics: notification and safety obligations
Definition, notification to the Commission and label indication: what the Regulation requires for nanomaterials.
What a nanomaterial is
Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 defines a nanomaterial as an insoluble or biopersistent, intentionally manufactured material with one or more external dimensions in the order of 1-100 nm.
These materials carry additional safety assessment requirements, given the specific properties at the nanoscale.
Notification to the Commission
Products containing nanomaterials must be notified to the European Commission six months before being placed on the market, with information on identification, specifications, quantity and toxicological profile.
This notification is separate from and additional to the standard CPNP product notification.
Label indication
Ingredients present as nanomaterials must be indicated in the ingredient list with the word "[nano]" after the ingredient name.
How CosmetiCheck helps
CosmetiCheck highlights ingredients that may require the nano wording and the related notification obligations, so specific duties are not overlooked. Final verification remains with qualified staff.
Informational content: not legal advice nor a product safety assessment.
